Quality Assurance
Reliable assessment, service quality and improvement that changes practice.

Quality & Internal Quality Assurance: find your direction.
Explore quality work without confusing two different remits. Internal Quality Assurance concentrates on assessment decisions and consistency; broader quality management evaluates and improves the quality of a service or portfolio.
Choose the pathway that fits your experience and intended vacancy. Qualifications, occupational competence and day-to-day activity are shown for the selected role rather than presented as one generic quality career.
Choose the route that fits.
An IQA qualification does not automatically establish expertise across every subject or service. Quality management and funding compliance also have different purposes.
Internal Quality Assurer
Internal Quality Assurers check that assessment decisions are consistent, supported by evidence and made within the relevant requirements. They plan sampling, support assessors and help a provider identify and improve weaknesses before they affect confidence in achievement.
The role combines scrutiny with development. It is not simply correcting paperwork or personally reassessing every learner. Occupational competence, assessment knowledge and the scope of the relevant qualification matter. A knowledge-only course is not automatically the same as a practitioner IQA qualification.

What fills a working week?
Expect sampling, assessor discussion, standardisation, records and preparation for external quality activity. The balance depends on assessor experience, qualification risk and provider systems. Ask whether the role also assesses learners or manages staff, and how independence and workload are maintained when responsibilities overlap.
Quality and professional judgement
Use a reasoned sampling plan and keep decisions traceable. A clean file is not enough if assessment judgements are weak. Feedback should identify what needs to change and how completion will be checked. Recognise the difference between internal assurance, external quality assurance and independent assessment roles.
Check the actual decision-making responsibility, professional requirements, working pattern and programme. Similar titles do not establish equivalent jobs.
Turn relevant experience into clear evidence.
These are application pointers, not a promise that an employer will waive essential criteria.
Experienced assessor
Explain how you recognised inconsistent evidence or decisions.
Capabilities to demonstrate
- Evaluate assessment evidence and explain your judgement clearly.
- Plan risk-based sampling rather than rely on an unchanging percentage.
- Support standardisation and assessor development without weakening standards.
Qualifications and development
City & Guilds TAQA guidance distinguishes knowledge-only internal quality assurance learning, practitioner qualifications and leading an IQA team. Check which is required and whether the role gives access to the practice needed for assessment.
Employers may also require occupational competence and assessor qualifications in the relevant subject. A generic IQA qualification does not establish current expertise in every sector or qualification.
The sources below explain the relevant occupational, programme or qualification context. Training requirements remain employer-specific.

Make your contribution easy to understand.
Use real examples. These are CareerPath preparation prompts, not questions supplied by a particular employer.
Prepare evidence of
- A sampling finding that changed an assessor's practice.
- A standardisation issue resolved with a clear rationale.
- A follow-up process that prevented repeat assessment errors.
Explain the situation, your judgement, your own actions and the result. Distinguish personal responsibility from team achievements, and remove identifying client or learner details.
Practise the judgement calls
Assessors disagree about an evidence threshold
Return to the requirements, compare reasoning through standardisation and record the agreed interpretation.
A strong assessor repeatedly misses actions
Use the agreed follow-up and escalation process; experience does not remove the need for reliable assurance.
Choose learning that fits the next step.
Start with the employer's essential criteria and the practice you need to develop.
Build relevant capability
Choose the correct knowledge, practitioner or lead qualification route.
Maintain occupational and assessment currency through practice and standardisation.

Questions worth settling early.
Is a knowledge-only IQA award enough to practise?
Not automatically. Check the provider's requirements and the qualification's practical assessment scope.
Is IQA the same as external quality assurance?
No. They have different responsibilities and relationships with the provider.
Does this guide pool different roles into one market figure?
No. The market selector displays one role's source-checked sample at a time. A smaller or empty sample does not mean that there are no opportunities in the wider market.
Are all listed jobs represented by CareerPath?
No. External advertisements do not establish a client relationship. Check the employer's source for the application process and current status.
