What does an Employability Team Leader do?
A Team Leader is responsible for helping advisers perform at their best while ensuring customers receive a high-quality service. The role combines leadership with operational delivery. A typical week may include coaching advisers, reviewing performance, observing appointments, supporting complex customer cases, monitoring quality, ensuring compliance and working closely with managers to achieve contractual targets.
Good Team Leaders spend as much time developing their people as they do reviewing performance data.
What skills do employers really look for?
In my experience, employers don't just want someone who has hit targets personally. They want someone who can help others succeed. Strong communication, coaching, organisation, decision-making and the ability to motivate different personalities are all essential. Experience managing KPIs, quality, safeguarding, compliance and customer outcomes will also strengthen your application.
CareerPath Insight
One of the biggest mistakes new Team Leaders make is believing they need to have all the answers. The strongest leaders I've worked with asked questions, listened to their teams and created an environment where people felt supported as well as accountable. When advisers feel valued, performance usually follows.
Salary, benefits and career progression
Most Team Leader roles offer competitive salaries, pension contributions, generous annual leave and ongoing leadership development. Many employers also invest in management training because strong Team Leaders are often the future Operations Managers. A typical progression route is Team Leader → Operations Manager → Head of Operations or Regional Manager.
