THE CAREER GUIDE

Business Development & Partnerships: find your direction.

Explore the commercial and partnership work that helps providers grow responsibly. This guide separates selling a deliverable training or service offer from building the relationships and pathways that make delivery work.

Bid management and learner recruitment appear as focused specialist routes. Both support growth, but a tender response and a prospective learner's decision need different skills, evidence and professional boundaries.

YOUR ROLE WITHIN THIS GUIDE

Choose the route that fits.

Employer-engagement BDM roles are not automatically training-sales roles. Partnership, bidding and learner recruitment evidence stays attached to its own role, not a pooled commercial average.

SELECTED ROUTE

Business Development Manager

Business Development Managers in Employment and Skills identify opportunities where a provider can deliver a valuable and financially sustainable service. In a training provider, this may mean understanding an employer's workforce needs and shaping an appropriate apprenticeship or skills offer.

The title needs interpretation. Some employability providers use it for finding participant job opportunities, which is covered in Employer Engagement. This guide focuses on growing the provider's training or service business. Effective development depends on what operations can deliver, the funding rules and the customer's genuine need—not simply signing a contract.

Related titles: Skills Business Development Manager · Apprenticeship Business Development Manager · Training Sales Manager. Check duties and essential criteria; titles alone are not proof of equivalence.

02 / THE WORK

What does good delivery look like?

A role-specific working sequence. Responsibilities and authority come from the individual job specification.

  1. 01

    Research

Understand sectors, customers and the provider's capabilities.

  2. 02

    Discover

Explore workforce, skills or service needs with decision-makers.

  3. 03

    Qualify

Assess suitability, affordability, eligibility and delivery fit.

  4. 04

    Design

Work with curriculum, operations and finance on the offer.

  5. 05

    Agree

Set clear commitments and record the commercial understanding.

  6. 06

    Handover

Support a reliable transition into delivery and account development.

What fills a working week?

Work may combine prospecting, discovery meetings, proposals, internal planning and account reviews. Ask what proportion is new business versus account management, how long the sales cycle is and who approves pricing or contractual commitments. The work becomes harder when sales and delivery systems measure success differently, so examine the handover process.

Quality and professional judgement

A sale should be judged alongside retention, delivery feasibility and margin. Do not promise funding, qualification availability or delivery times that have not been checked. Good commercial records explain customer need, assumptions, approvals and next steps, making the relationship usable by delivery colleagues rather than dependent on one salesperson.

Before comparing vacancies

Check the actual decision-making responsibility, professional requirements, working pattern and programme. Similar titles do not establish equivalent jobs.

03 / ENTRY & SKILLS

Turn relevant experience into clear evidence.

These are application pointers, not a promise that an employer will waive essential criteria.

YOUR TRANSFERABLE EXPERIENCE

Training sales

Show how the service sold remained suitable during delivery.

Capabilities to demonstrate

  • Ask questions that expose the real workforce or service problem.
  • Build proposals with delivery and finance colleagues, not in isolation.
  • Manage a credible pipeline with evidence-based stages and forecasts.

Qualifications and development

Relevant sales, account development and sector knowledge can matter more than a generic commercial qualification. Check whether the post needs apprenticeship, adult skills or commissioner-facing experience.

Training in commercial negotiation and account planning can help, but funding and programme knowledge need current employer-specific induction. Management standards can support development; do not assume government-funded access to every leadership apprenticeship remains available.

The sources below explain the relevant occupational, programme or qualification context. Training requirements remain employer-specific.

04 / PROGRESSION

06 / PAY & WORKING CONDITIONS

Compare the whole role—not only the salary.

Market figures appear only when the selected role's source sample supports them.

Role-specific checks

Separate base salary from on-target earnings and ask about realistic sales-cycle timing.

Check whether incentives depend on sign-up, starts, retained business or collected revenue.

Like-for-like comparison

Confirm annual or hourly pay, full-time or pro-rata terms, and whether allowances or bonuses are included. Ask about contracted hours, location, expenses, pension and professional development. An advertised midpoint is not a measure of employees' actual earnings.

Related roles share this guide, not a combined salary average. The market-role selector identifies which sample is being displayed.

07 / APPLICATION & INTERVIEW

Make your contribution easy to understand.

Use real examples. These are CareerPath preparation prompts, not questions supplied by a particular employer.

Prepare evidence of

  1. A customer problem converted into a deliverable service proposal.
  2. A sale you declined or reshaped because it was unsuitable.
  3. A forecast or account plan improved using evidence.

Explain the situation, your judgement, your own actions and the result. Distinguish personal responsibility from team achievements, and remove identifying client or learner details.

Practise the judgement calls

A customer requests a start date operations cannot meet

Agree capacity and a realistic alternative internally before committing externally.

A large opportunity depends on unclear funding

Resolve eligibility and commercial assumptions before treating the opportunity as secured revenue.

08 / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Choose learning that fits the next step.

Start with the employer's essential criteria and the practice you need to develop.

ROLE-SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT

Build relevant capability

Prioritise consultative discovery, forecasting and operational handover.

Keep programme and funding knowledge current through authoritative guidance and employer training.

09 / BEFORE YOU APPLY

Questions worth settling early.

Does every BDM manage people?

No. Many are individual contributors with account or revenue responsibility.

Should employer-engagement BDM roles be included in these salary comparisons?

Not automatically. Different responsibilities and incentive models can make those comparisons misleading.

Does this guide pool different roles into one market figure?

No. The market selector displays one role's source-checked sample at a time. A smaller or empty sample does not mean that there are no opportunities in the wider market.

Are all listed jobs represented by CareerPath?

No. External advertisements do not establish a client relationship. Check the employer's source for the application process and current status.
