THE CAREER GUIDE

IPS & Supported Employment Specialist: find your direction.

Explore two routes into specialist employment support. Both involve understanding the person and developing suitable work opportunities, but IPS is a defined model rather than a label for every supported-employment service.

Select the route that matches the vacancy. The working process, entry considerations and development advice change with your selection; the market panel identifies exactly which role its figures describe.

YOUR ROLE WITHIN THIS GUIDE

Choose the route that fits.

IPS and other supported-employment approaches share some skills but are not identical operating models. Model-specific training and supervision must be checked for the service.

SELECTED ROUTE

IPS Employment Specialist

An IPS Employment Specialist supports people to pursue paid work using Individual Placement and Support. The role connects a person's employment preferences with practical job search, employer relationships and ongoing support, within the service's IPS model.

The distinction is the way the work is organised, not simply a different adviser title. Integration with the relevant support team, attention to model quality and a sustained focus on employment shape everyday decisions. Mental health, treatment and other IPS settings can have different referral and partnership arrangements.

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

02 / THE WORK

What does good delivery look like?

A role-specific working sequence. Responsibilities and authority come from the individual job specification.

  1. 01

    Engage

Understand whether the person wants support towards paid employment.

  2. 02

    Profile

Explore preferences, strengths, work history and relevant support needs.

  3. 03

    Search

Develop a focused job search rather than a generic readiness programme.

  4. 04

    Develop employers

Build relationships around suitable work and the person's preferences.

  5. 05

    Coordinate

Work with the relevant professional team and agreed information-sharing arrangements.

  6. 06

    Support in work

Adapt support as employment and the person's circumstances change.

What fills a working week?

A working week may combine client meetings, employer visits, team discussions and records. Employment support does not stop at job entry. Ask how time for employer development is protected, what travel is expected and how the service integrates specialists into the wider team rather than leaving them isolated.

Quality and professional judgement

Outcomes and fidelity both matter. A busy diary or high referral count does not demonstrate delivery of the IPS model. Use supervision to review preferences, employer work, engagement and support after job entry. The applicable fidelity framework and caseload expectations should be confirmed locally; do not assume every IPS service is identical.

Before comparing vacancies

Check the actual decision-making responsibility, professional requirements, working pattern and programme. Similar titles do not establish equivalent jobs.

03 / ENTRY & SKILLS

Turn relevant experience into clear evidence.

These are application pointers, not a promise that an employer will waive essential criteria.

YOUR TRANSFERABLE EXPERIENCE

Employment advice

Show a person-led job match and sustained support after employment.

Capabilities to demonstrate

  • Communicate with clients, employers and professional teams in different ways.
  • Develop employer relationships rather than relying only on advertised vacancies.
  • Use supervision and evidence to improve model-consistent practice.

Qualifications and development

Employers recruit from several backgrounds and set their own essential criteria. IPS knowledge, relevant employment support and confidence working with the service's client group are important to explore. Do not describe clinical registration as universally required for an Employment Specialist.

Seek model-specific induction, supported employer visits and supervision. An optional general coaching course is not a replacement for IPS training, nor does the job authorise clinical assessment or treatment.

The sources below explain the relevant occupational, programme or qualification context. Training requirements remain employer-specific.

06 / PAY & WORKING CONDITIONS

Compare the whole role—not only the salary.

Market figures appear only when the selected role's source sample supports them.

Role-specific checks

Ask about employer visits, mileage, integration time and supervision.

Separate a frontline specialist salary from senior specialist or team-leader pay.

Like-for-like comparison

Confirm annual or hourly pay, full-time or pro-rata terms, and whether allowances or bonuses are included. Ask about contracted hours, location, expenses, pension and professional development. An advertised midpoint is not a measure of employees' actual earnings.

Related roles share this guide, not a combined salary average. The market-role selector identifies which sample is being displayed.

07 / APPLICATION & INTERVIEW

Make your contribution easy to understand.

Use real examples. These are CareerPath preparation prompts, not questions supplied by a particular employer.

Prepare evidence of

  1. A job opportunity developed around an individual's preferences.
  2. A productive employer relationship built from a cold introduction.
  3. A case where feedback or supervision changed your approach.

Explain the situation, your judgement, your own actions and the result. Distinguish personal responsibility from team achievements, and remove identifying client or learner details.

Practise the judgement calls

The client wants a job you would not choose

Explore the preference, give relevant information and collaborate on a realistic search rather than substitute your own goal.

An employer raises a concern after a start

Agree contact with the person, clarify the issue and coordinate proportionate support within your remit.

08 / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Choose learning that fits the next step.

Start with the employer's essential criteria and the practice you need to develop.

ROLE-SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT

Build relevant capability

Prioritise IPS induction, employer development and the service's fidelity expectations.

Use specialist learning and supervision before buying a general employability certificate.

09 / BEFORE YOU APPLY

Questions worth settling early.

Is IPS the same as every supported-employment service?

No. IPS is a particular model. Check the service's operating framework rather than assuming all specialist employment jobs use it.

Does Senior Employment Specialist always mean a larger caseload?

No. Some employers use that title for team leadership. Read line-management and supervision duties carefully.

Does this guide pool different roles into one market figure?

No. The market selector displays one role's source-checked sample at a time. A smaller or empty sample does not mean that there are no opportunities in the wider market.

Are all listed jobs represented by CareerPath?

No. External advertisements do not establish a client relationship. Check the employer's source for the application process and current status.
