THE CAREER GUIDE

Team Leader & Service Manager: find your direction.

Explore the move into leading people and local delivery. This guide brings Team Leader, Service Manager and employability Business Manager roles together so you can compare what each level is responsible for.

Employers organise services differently. A team leader may retain a caseload, a service manager may coordinate a specialist pathway, and a business manager may run a site. Select the remit that best matches the vacancy.

YOUR ROLE WITHIN THIS GUIDE

Choose the route that fits.

These are related leadership routes, not a universal grading hierarchy. Specialist supervision, budget authority and retained delivery work must remain visible in comparisons.

SELECTED ROUTE

Team Leader

Team Leaders help frontline staff deliver a reliable service. They translate contract expectations into practical routines, coach individuals, resolve day-to-day problems and create an environment where concerns are raised before quality deteriorates.

It is a move from being responsible mainly for your own work to improving the work of a team. Some employers retain a delivery caseload within the role; others expect full-time leadership. In IPS, model-specific supervision and fidelity can be central. A Senior Employment Specialist title may therefore be a management job rather than simply a more experienced frontline post.

Related titles: Delivery Team Leader · Employment Team Manager · IPS Team Leader · Senior Employment Specialist — Team Leader. Check duties and essential criteria; titles alone are not proof of equivalence.

ROLE-SPECIFIC RECRUITMENT EVIDENCE

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

02 / THE WORK

What does good delivery look like?

A role-specific working sequence. Responsibilities and authority come from the individual job specification.

  1. 01

    Understand

Review team capability, caseloads and service expectations.

  2. 02

    Plan

Allocate work and make priorities achievable and explicit.

  3. 03

    Coach

Use observation, feedback and supervision to develop staff.

  4. 04

    Support

Resolve barriers and escalate risks beyond your authority.

  5. 05

    Review

Look at quality and progress alongside activity and outcomes.

  6. 06

    Improve

Agree changes, follow them through and check their effect.

What fills a working week?

Expect supervision, team meetings, performance reviews, case discussion and time alongside staff. Avoid filling every hour with meetings: useful leadership includes observing delivery and checking how processes work in practice. Ask about retained caseload, span of control, recruitment responsibilities and the support available for managing difficult people issues.

Quality and professional judgement

Targets do not replace professional judgement. Review trends and individual circumstances before deciding why performance is weak. In a model-specific service, quantity without fidelity may be poor delivery. Keep safeguarding, quality and workload concerns visible, and know where your authority ends when staffing or contract decisions are needed.

Before comparing vacancies

Check the actual decision-making responsibility, professional requirements, working pattern and programme. Similar titles do not establish equivalent jobs.

03 / ENTRY & SKILLS

Turn relevant experience into clear evidence.

These are application pointers, not a promise that an employer will waive essential criteria.

YOUR TRANSFERABLE EXPERIENCE

Experienced adviser or trainer

Show how you helped a colleague improve, not only your own results.

Capabilities to demonstrate

  • Give clear feedback that connects behaviour with service quality.
  • Prioritise fairly and explain decisions about workload.
  • Use evidence and supervision rather than managing solely through dashboards.

Qualifications and development

Employers may value strong delivery experience and evidence of coaching colleagues. First-line management is not automatically the next step for every high performer; demonstrate that you can develop others.

Leadership learning can support the move, but IPS and other specialist services also need model-specific competence. Confirm current training and funding arrangements rather than assuming every management apprenticeship is available on the same basis.

The sources below explain the relevant occupational, programme or qualification context. Training requirements remain employer-specific.

04 / PROGRESSION

Explore the next step that fits your strengths.

Related routes and levels of responsibility—not guaranteed promotions or a fixed sequence.

06 / PAY & WORKING CONDITIONS

Compare the whole role—not only the salary.

Market figures appear only when the selected role's source sample supports them.

Role-specific checks

Ask whether salary reflects a retained caseload as well as team management.

Compare team size, geography and specialist supervision requirements.

Like-for-like comparison

Confirm annual or hourly pay, full-time or pro-rata terms, and whether allowances or bonuses are included. Ask about contracted hours, location, expenses, pension and professional development. An advertised midpoint is not a measure of employees' actual earnings.

Related roles share this guide, not a combined salary average. The market-role selector identifies which sample is being displayed.

07 / APPLICATION & INTERVIEW

Make your contribution easy to understand.

Use real examples. These are CareerPath preparation prompts, not questions supplied by a particular employer.

Prepare evidence of

  1. A colleague's practice improved through your feedback.
  2. A workload decision that protected quality under pressure.
  3. A performance issue diagnosed before deciding on an intervention.

Explain the situation, your judgement, your own actions and the result. Distinguish personal responsibility from team achievements, and remove identifying client or learner details.

Practise the judgement calls

A strong performer produces weak records

Address the quality risk directly, agree support and follow up rather than exempt the person because outcomes are strong.

The team feels a target is unrealistic

Explore the evidence and practical constraints, agree controllable actions and escalate resource or specification issues clearly.

08 / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Choose learning that fits the next step.

Start with the employer's essential criteria and the practice you need to develop.

ROLE-SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT

Build relevant capability

Prioritise supervision, feedback and fair workload management.

For specialist teams, develop the actual model and fidelity knowledge needed to supervise practice.

09 / BEFORE YOU APPLY

Questions worth settling early.

Do I need previous line management?

Some posts require it; others accept evidence of coaching and acting-up responsibilities. Check essential criteria.

Is Senior Employment Specialist always a separate guide?

No. The title can mean leadership or senior practice. This library routes candidates by responsibility, not title alone.

Does this guide pool different roles into one market figure?

No. The market selector displays one role's source-checked sample at a time. A smaller or empty sample does not mean that there are no opportunities in the wider market.

Are all listed jobs represented by CareerPath?

No. External advertisements do not establish a client relationship. Check the employer's source for the application process and current status.
