THE CAREER GUIDE

Job Coach: find your direction.

Job coaching focuses on helping someone learn and sustain real workplace tasks. This guide explains practical instruction, collaboration with employers and how support can develop independence rather than replace the person's work.

Learning Support Practitioner is included as a related route. It shares an interest in access and independence, but usually centres on participation in learning rather than the full workplace job-coaching remit.

YOUR ROLE WITHIN THIS GUIDE

Understand the work behind the title.

A supported-internship Job Coach, a general Employment Coach and a Learning Support Practitioner are not automatically the same job. Keep the setting and duties visible.

CORE ROLE

Job Coach

A Job Coach helps a person learn and sustain the practical tasks and routines of work. In supported internships, this means supporting the intern and employer during a work-based study programme with the aim of progression towards paid employment.

This is different from simply helping someone write a CV. The coach needs to understand the actual job, break down learning, adapt communication and judge when to reduce support. Some employers use Job Coach more broadly, so read the description before assuming that every advertised role is an internship post.

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

The sections below cover Job Coach.

02 / THE WORK

What does good delivery look like?

A role-specific working sequence. Responsibilities and authority come from the individual job specification.

  1. 01

    Understand

Learn the person's preferences and the workplace's genuine tasks.

  2. 02

    Analyse

Break a task into a clear and teachable sequence.

  3. 03

    Demonstrate

Use an agreed instruction approach and accessible aids.

  4. 04

    Practise

Observe the person doing the task and adapt support.

  5. 05

    Fade

Reduce prompts as confidence and competence develop.

  6. 06

    Progress

Review with the person and employer and plan the next employment step.

What fills a working week?

A working week is often driven by placement or workplace schedules, not a standard office diary. Expect time on site, preparation of learning aids, employer conversations, progress records and coordination with tutors or families where appropriate. Clarify travel, split-site work and the balance between workplace contact and administration.

Quality and professional judgement

Support should help the person learn, not permanently substitute the coach's labour for theirs. Track progress against meaningful tasks and independence. Discuss how support is reviewed and tapered, and how new tasks or workplace changes are introduced safely. Employer feedback is useful, but the person's own experience must remain visible.

Before comparing vacancies

Check the actual decision-making responsibility, professional requirements, working pattern and programme. Similar titles do not establish equivalent jobs.

03 / ENTRY & SKILLS

Turn relevant experience into clear evidence.

These are application pointers, not a promise that an employer will waive essential criteria.

YOUR TRANSFERABLE EXPERIENCE

Learning support

Show how you adapted instruction while increasing a learner's independence.

Capabilities to demonstrate

  • Observe work carefully and explain tasks without unnecessary complexity.
  • Adapt instruction and aids to individual learning needs.
  • Build professional relationships with workplace supervisors and education colleagues.

Qualifications and development

England's supported-internship guidance identifies specialised job-coach training aligned with supported-employment occupational standards and systematic instruction. Ask what training and supervised practice the employer provides.

A general support or teaching background can be relevant, but it does not automatically establish job-coaching competence. Check required experience, checks and working arrangements for the particular setting.

The sources below explain the relevant occupational, programme or qualification context. Training requirements remain employer-specific.

04 / PROGRESSION

Explore the next step that fits your strengths.

Related routes and levels of responsibility—not guaranteed promotions or a fixed sequence.

Team Leader

Coordinate coaches and develop consistent practice.

Service Manager

Manage supported-internship or employment delivery.

Operations Manager

Oversee services and employer partnerships.

Some routes require a different professional qualification, more management experience or additional practice. Links open the relevant route within one of the 15 guides.

05 / DELIVERY CONTEXT

Understand the service behind the vacancy.

Programme, learner or participant group and professional remit shape the role.

Supported internships

The educational programme and workplace learning objectives matter; do not equate the internship with an ordinary job vacancy.

06 / PAY & WORKING CONDITIONS

Compare the whole role—not only the salary.

Market figures appear only when the selected role's source sample supports them.

Role-specific checks

Compare term-time, annualised and full-year salaries carefully.

Ask whether travel between placements and preparation time are included in paid hours.

Like-for-like comparison

Confirm annual or hourly pay, full-time or pro-rata terms, and whether allowances or bonuses are included. Ask about contracted hours, location, expenses, pension and professional development. An advertised midpoint is not a measure of employees' actual earnings.

Related roles share this guide, not a combined salary average. The market-role selector identifies which sample is being displayed.

07 / APPLICATION & INTERVIEW

Make your contribution easy to understand.

Use real examples. These are CareerPath preparation prompts, not questions supplied by a particular employer.

Prepare evidence of

  1. A task taught in a way the learner could subsequently complete more independently.
  2. A workplace relationship that improved the learner's experience.
  3. An example of changing your approach after observing difficulty.

Explain the situation, your judgement, your own actions and the result. Distinguish personal responsibility from team achievements, and remove identifying client or learner details.

Practise the judgement calls

The employer asks you to complete the intern's work

Clarify your coaching remit, explore why the task is difficult and agree appropriate support rather than quietly replacing the learner.

An intern learns one task but struggles elsewhere

Check the new context, instructions and sensory or practical demands before assuming the original learning was lost.

08 / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Choose learning that fits the next step.

Start with the employer's essential criteria and the practice you need to develop.

ROLE-SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT

Build relevant capability

Prioritise supported-employment and systematic-instruction training.

Use supervised workplace observation and feedback, not online certificates alone.

09 / BEFORE YOU APPLY

Questions worth settling early.

Is Job Coach the same as Employment Coach?

Not necessarily. This guide focuses on workplace learning. General caseload-based employment coaching is covered in Employment Adviser.

Do all posts follow the school calendar?

No. Check term-time status, holiday expectations and employer placement schedules in the actual contract.

Does this guide pool different roles into one market figure?

No. The market selector displays one role's source-checked sample at a time. A smaller or empty sample does not mean that there are no opportunities in the wider market.

Are all listed jobs represented by CareerPath?

No. External advertisements do not establish a client relationship. Check the employer's source for the application process and current status.
