Supported
Internships
The employer placement, education and specialist job-coaching model behind a route towards paid employment.
An educational placement is not the same as an ordinary vacancy.
England's supported-internship guidance describes a structured study programme for young people with an education, health and care plan. The aim is progression towards sustained paid work. It should not be advertised as an apprenticeship or a guaranteed paid job simply because much of the learning takes place at an employer.
UK Government: Programme guidanceUK Government: Employer guidanceUnderstand the offer before the job title.
The programme combines substantial workplace learning with an individualised education offer and specialist job coaching. A job coach helps the intern learn real tasks and routines, working with employer and education colleagues rather than replacing the learner's contribution.
UK Government: Programme guidanceThe employer placement needs to be purposeful and appropriate to the intern's goals. Education staff and workplace supervisors have different responsibilities; a functioning partnership makes those responsibilities clear before the placement begins.

A guide to the operating sequence—not a fixed timetable, caseload formula or estimate of outcomes.
Plan the route
Understand the young person's aspirations and support needs.
Develop the placement
Identify meaningful workplace tasks and appropriate supervision.
Teach the tasks
Use specialist coaching and an accessible instruction approach.
Build independence
Review progress and reduce prompts as competence develops.
Move towards paid work
Plan employer engagement and the next employment step beyond the programme.
Three roles in one coherent placement
Education provider
Coordinates the study programme, learning and relevant support. Workplace activity must connect to the intern's development plan.
UK Government: Programme guidanceEmployer
Offers a real working environment, supervision and opportunities to learn useful tasks. The placement is not merely observation.
UK Government: Employer guidanceJob coach
Uses specialist supported-employment and instruction skills to help the intern learn and become more independent.
UK Government: Programme guidanceWho is responsible for delivery?
Eligibility and local coordination
Confirm the study-programme and EHC-plan requirements, local arrangements and the responsibilities of education and employment partners.
UK Government: Programme guidanceTraining and support
Guidance identifies specialised job-coach training and systematic instruction. General support experience does not automatically establish competence in workplace coaching.

CareerPath's practical interpretation. These prompts are not additional programme rules or promised staffing requirements.
Know what the role actually requires.
Ask about placement sites, travel, term-time working, preparation time and supervision. A Job Coach title can cover a demanding workplace schedule rather than a conventional office caseload.
Prepare an example of teaching a task, observing the person's own performance and reducing support. Explain how you adapted instruction rather than completing the task for them.
Explore the roles behind the delivery.

Is a Job Coach just an Employment Adviser?
Not necessarily. Workplace learning, task analysis and systematic instruction are distinctive responsibilities in this setting.
UK Government: Programme guidanceDoes every internship lead automatically to a paid job?
No. Paid employment is the intended progression, not a guaranteed outcome for every placement. Check the programme's actual employer and transition arrangements.
UK Government: Employer guidanceUK Government: Programme guidanceChoose training for the role—not just the programme name.
Start with the employer's essential criteria and the relevant Career Guide. Programme induction, model training, occupational competence and professional qualifications serve different purposes. An optional course does not replace an essential requirement.
