Sector-based Work
Academy Programmes
SWAPs combine training, work experience and an employer recruitment opportunity around real demand.
A recruitment opportunity—not a guaranteed paid job.
DWP guidance describes pre-employment training, work experience and a guaranteed job interview or support with the employer's recruitment process. Interviews should be offered wherever possible, but neither route guarantees paid employment. Learning-provider and employer requirements must be agreed around genuine recruitment demand. Wales has a different employment-and-skills pathway; do not label the English and Scottish SWAP offer as UK-wide.
DWP: Employer guidanceDWP: Delivery guidanceUnderstand the offer before the job title.
A SWAP brings Jobcentre Plus, employers and learning providers together to prepare suitable people for an occupational opportunity. Its strength is the connection between what is taught, what happens in the workplace and what the employer actually recruits for.
DWP: Delivery guidanceThe programme is not simply a short course renamed to attract referrals. Timing, eligibility, work experience and the recruitment step need to be clear before participants join. A completed academy is not proof that a person has been hired.
DWP: Employer guidanceThree core components, with preparation and follow-through
A guide to the operating sequence—not a fixed timetable, caseload formula or estimate of outcomes.
Agree demand
Employer, Jobcentre Plus and provider confirm the recruitment need and offer.
Prepare learners
Identify suitable participants and explain the commitment.
Train
Deliver pre-employment learning relevant to the job.
Experience work
Provide the agreed workplace experience and supervision.
Interview and follow up
Deliver the recruitment opportunity and review the next step.
The three components must fit together
Training
Build the skills and understanding needed for the intended work rather than deliver a generic course regardless of employer needs.
DWP: Delivery guidanceWork experience
Agree tasks, supervision and practical arrangements so participants understand the workplace and can demonstrate what they have learned.
DWP: Employer guidanceRecruitment step
The employer's interview commitment is not an employment guarantee. Be clear about the selection process and what follows an unsuccessful outcome.
DWP: Employer guidanceWho is responsible for delivery?
Jobcentre Plus
Works with the employer and learning provider on the academy and referral arrangements. Participant suitability needs checking through the agreed process.
DWP: Delivery guidanceEmployer and provider
Recruitment needs, training content, work experience and the interview should be planned as one pathway. One partner cannot safely promise another's capacity.
DWP: Employer guidanceWhat does this mean for the work?
CareerPath's practical interpretation. These prompts are not additional programme rules or promised staffing requirements.
Know what the role actually requires.
Ask whether the post is teaching, learner engagement, employer coordination or participant casework. Those functions contribute differently to a successful academy.
Prepare an example of translating an employer requirement into practical preparation. Explain what happened after an interview, not only how many people attended training.
Explore the roles behind the delivery.
These are relevant career routes, not confirmation of an open vacancy or a fixed staffing model for this programme.

Is a SWAP the same as Jobs Guarantee?
No. SWAPs are short pre-employment pathways; Jobs Guarantee provides a defined subsidised paid-job period for an eligible cohort.
DWP: Employer guidanceDWP: National grant guidanceCan a course be advertised as a SWAP without an employer?
The programme is employer-linked. Check that the training, workplace and recruitment commitments are genuinely in place.
DWP: Delivery guidanceChoose training for the role—not just the programme name.
Start with the employer's essential criteria and the relevant Career Guide. Programme induction, model training, occupational competence and professional qualifications serve different purposes. An optional course does not replace an essential requirement.
The Training & courses action uses CareerPath's existing UKCPD referral. Ad / affiliate: commission may be earned. Course availability, fees and recognition must be checked with the provider; no universal accreditation or mandatory course is implied.
